Fiji has produced a number of great writers. Vijay Mishra, Satendra Nandan, Subramani, Brij Lal, Ahmed Ali, Vijay Naidu, Sudesh Mishra and Raymond C Pillai are among the established writers. Kamlesh Sharma, Mohit Prasad, Kavita Nandan, Anurag Subramani, Shalini Akil, Sunil Bhan and Satish Rai are among the emerging writers. There must be many more writers in the Fijian diaspora that we do not know about. We will attempt to list details of all the Fijian writers from Fiji and the diaspora and their books here.

Raivision has copies of some of the books written by Fijian writers. Among them are Shifting Locations (Edited by Subramani), Kala Ki Talaash (Subramani), Rahul's Road (Dr Kamlesh Sharma), Indian Encyclopedia (Edited by Brij Lal). We will provide more infromation about these books and how to purchase them. Proceeds of these books will go towards charitable causes such as the Milaap-Discover Indian Roots Project and Girmit Projects.

We will attempt to profile prominent Fiji writers as and when we get writer's approval and information about them. The first writer we are profiling here is Subramani, one of the most acclaimed Fiji writers. We begin by posting his profile here.

Subramani: Author Profile
Subramani is one of Fiji’s most prominent writers. He is a novelist, short story writer, a dramatist as well as a critic. He is unique among writers in the new literatures in that he has written both in English and in Fiji Hindi.

Subramani came into prominence when he won an international short story prize fore his ‘Marigolds’ in 1978. Since then he has written a number of widely acclaimed short fiction, many of them have found a place in various anthologies. The stories are gathered together in a book entitled The Fantasy Eaters (1988). Apart from his own writing, he has been encouraging other Fiji writers to publish. As a result two publications have come into being edited by Subramani: The Indo-Fijian Experience (1979), a book commemorating 100 years of Indian settlement in Fiji; and more recently Shifting Location (2009) that has Fiji writers writing describing their experience of living and working in Australia. Both these books are regarded as landmark publications. (Click here to read more)
