Since the two coups on 1987 and mainly because of them, thousands of Fijians, mainly of Indian ancestrory, has migrated to the western countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA. Some also have joined their compatriots who had migrated to UK prior to Fiji's independance in 1970.
It is estimated that today some 250,000 people of Fijian origin live in what now has become the Fijian diaspora.
