- Milaap-Discover your Indian roots project
This project will assist those descendants of the indentured Indians laborers (the girmitiyas) who were transported to Fiji between 1879 and 1916 and exiled in there after successful completion of their indenture agreements (girmits), to reconnect with their ancestral homes and villages in India
An introduction to the term girmit
Today the terms girmit and girmitiyas are being used by increasing number of people to refer to approximately 1.2 million Indians who were transported from by several European nations to supply cheap labour to plantations in Mauritius, Guyana (previously known as British Guyana), Trinidad & Tobago, Surinam, Jamaica, South Africa, Reunion, Fiji and several other places.
Along with the terms girmit and girmitiyas (more often used in the Fijian Diaspora) terms such as Jehajis and contractees are also used to refer to the indentured Indians. Girmit and contractees have been derived from the agreement and contact these Indians supposedly agreed to and put their thumb prints to indicate that they understood and agreed to their terms of indenture. The term Jehajis are used to refer to the bond established between those transported on the same jehaj (ship) that transported them to the colonies. Often the bond of friendship lasted throughout the indentureship and in cases on the majority who were permanently exiled in the colonies; it lasted throughout their lives and often passed on to their descendants.
Today the descendants of these indentured Indians who were exiled in the colonies number somewhere from 10 million to 12 million people. Many still live in the now independent colonies, but a significant number of them now live in the western countries including Holland, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Significant amount of work has been done in the original countries of indenture as well as in the west on the indenture system as well the indentured people. It is now revealed that there are many things that are common to all the indentured Indians, including where and how they were recruited, treatment during transportation and on the plantations and in the Coolie lines, problems with the original inhabitants or other races living in the colonies and the way majority of them could not return to their homes in India.
However despite all the common factors that unite the indenture experience and the common issues that concern many of them, till today no attempt has been made to bring representatives of all these communities on a common platform. One result of this is the 12 million people who share common cultures, experiences, political and social problems, do not share a common name. They are put under the banner of people of Indian origin (PIOs), which for me hold little significance nor relevance.
Therefore, in the absence of any common name, by default, I refer to them as girmitiyas and the system as the girmit system, until such time when a common name is agreed upon to refer exclusively to the indenture system and the descendants of the indentured Indians.
